The combination of these two battles marks the transition from Japanese initiative to Allied initiative across the Pacific, enabling subsequent offensives toward Japan.

Other options include battles that were important or strategic milestones, but they don’t together represent the clearest, coordinated shift in momentum as cleanly. Pearl Harbor was the attack that started the war, Guadalcanal was a critical early campaign, and Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Coral Sea, or Saipan contributed to the overall war effort, but the pair that most historians view as turning points are Midway and Leyte Gulf.
